Hitting the Pool

This was Maren's first time swimming. I'd say she enjoyed it.

Unfortunately we had to leave a little early. If there is a lesson to be learned here I would say it's 'don't run away fom your parents when they ask you to come here'. Embrie was running away from her daddy when she got hurt. She decided to run right to the bottom of the slide and someone else just happened to be coming down and in a blur of confusion this happend.

You know, this poor tooth is doomed to die. It's been shoved up into her gums once, it was chipped shortly after that in another incident. And pretty much anytime she gets a mouth injury it's in this same place. The x-rays for this left front tooth look a little iffy, the dentist says we'll just have to wait and see what happens when the permenant tooth grows in. Obviously the lip doesn't escape these fights either. For now all we know is that it hurts.

Our Irish Holiday

You'd have thought it was Christmas the way these kids were looking forward to St. Patrick's Day! Garrett came running in my room in the morning saying, "they really did mom! they really did! the Leprechauns were here!"

those tricky creatures walked on our mirrors, turned our toilet water green...

turned our pictures crooked ....

messed with our chairs, some were upside down and some were upstairs...

and they must have been playing kickball or soccer with our balloons...
It was really cute when they started picking out every little thing out of place and suggesting that it must have been the leprechauns.

but for all that trouble thank goodness they left a good surprise too!

arrows of magic dust lead the way

We celebrated by wearing a bunch of green of course, we read some leprechaun books, played green bingo, and (the night before) we watched 'Darby O'Gill and the Little People'. (LOVE! he he)

We had a green dinner of grapes, cucumbers, kiwi's and then meat and cheese quessdilla's dipped in green ranch(not really irish) we had cream soda in green glasses. --to which I might wonder why I went to so much work, my kids were nervous about the green ranch, said they didn't like the quesadillas, cucumbers, or cream soda... sigh! go figure--

then we had green dessert Pistacho pudding with grahm cracker -Embrie and Brad didn't like that either-

Why go all out for St. Patrick's day? Callahan is an Irish name after all!
ha ha just for fun. Its actually a holiday that I don't quite understand. I know that it is for St. Patrick who helped the cause of Christianity in Ireland and 'chased out Paeganism' so to speak. And that the shamrock symbolizes the Holy Trinity. However I am not sure where all the rest comes into that. But we had fun with it and I think we'll continue to do so but I may not go to so much effort with the food next time . . .

Lucky Boy

Garrett also had a St. Patrick's Day Party with friends.

They had a green lunch, played games and went on a treasure hunt left for them by a sneaky leprechaun.

Garrett had to attend the party alone since his sisters were sick, or I would have more pictures. But he had a great time. He'd been looking forward to it all week.

the bond between siblings

They really do love each other, don't they?

These pictures of Garrett and Embrie speak to me of our everyday lives. It wasn't that long ago, a little less than a year in fact, that I was going crazy thinking that they hated each other. It seemed as though every 5 minutes I was breaking up a fist fight.

They don't fight anymore! -ha ha yeah right! that is a little too optimistic.
But things have definately changed. And not just their behavior, but the way I see it as well.

Shortly after Garrett started school, he became very shy with his class mates and didn't seem to be making friends, only playing alone. This was out of character I thought. It worried me, but I also knew that I couldn't force him go out of his comfort zone only encourage. But an unexpected thing began to stem from this....

He started asking Embrie to come with him into the playground before the bell rang. (In fact, this strange behavior is what clued me into his shyness at school.)
Then he would bring home drawings he would make for Embrie (with her name on them) while in the art center. Then they began to play so well in the afternoon that I have been forgetting to set up playdates with other friends. Embrie getting older, was able to understand better the make believe games Garrett wanted to play. Garrett started drawing pictures of him and her together. When I asked him if Embrie was his best friend he would say yes. And when I asked Embrie what friends she wanted at her birthday party she said Garrett!

Garrett is slowly over coming his shyness at school. Of course he still wants to play with friends his age so does she, but it hasn't changed the brother and sister bond that they have. They still fight. And that is where the change in my view comes from. I realize that spending that much time together is going to cause some arguments. But they still love each other. It's my opportunity to teach them how to manage their differences.

And where does Maren figure in? Well, she gets mauled. She doesn't mind them too much and I think she likes to have them around, but there are times when she has had enough. And she definitely needs a bodyguard 24/7.

There haven't been any traumatic experiences so far. Embrie has become a little more agressive with her and jealous of her recently. It reminds me of Garrett getting that way when she was a baby too. Lucky for Maren, Embrie isn't quite as agressive as Garrett was and since G & E both have one another I think this spares her a certain amount of grief. But they can both be very sweet with her.

It's evident that they both love their baby sister very much and she loves them.

I know that as she grows and as they grow up the relationships will change. It gives me something to look forward to as I will get to witness the sisterly bond that I hope will come for Embrie and Maren. It makes me worry about how Garrett will feel being the only boy (then again I was the only girl and the oldest and I survived).

So I am content to enjoy this moment while it lasts and try to be present with them. Not to be too sad as they grow up and look forward to the future. But most of all I hope I won't take them for granted. They are so precious.

Maren at the 1/2 way mark!

Maren Reese Callahan

6 months old now!

our little angel is growing so fast and developing her own personality.

She has been such an easy going baby. She still rarely cries and doesn't usually cry very loudly either. (However, like everyone there is a limit to how much she'll take.)

She apparently has developed a high tolerance for noise. You have to in this house. But she loves her brother and sister and laughs whenever they are jumping up and down and yelling "huga-buga" in her face.

She loves people, especially a fresh face. She sees her family all the time so if someone new talks to her she eats it up!

Speaking of eating she is loving all of her new foods, cereals, fruits and veggies. She hasn't turned down any of them andyou can tell by those sweet chubby cheeks!

She has been sitting up since 5 months old and although it took a while she is rolling over too! She "talks" up a storm. Loves to shriek and squawk. She is even starting to make some familiar sounds like her "d's" and "m's" the competition is on to see if dada or mama will come first. She will be the tie breaker since Garrett said "mama" first and Embrie said "dada" first.

New things to her world are her jumper chair and her high chair.

She loves it when we go outside, even if it is a little bit cold.

What a sweet little thing we have in Maren. She is a great source of joy in our home.
